Externally pressurised metal expansion joints, also known as high-pressure metal compensators, are used in applications requiring large axial movements. In such applications, long, multi-convolution stainless steel axial expansion joints are designed to manage greater thermal expansion and contraction. However, under high internal pressure, the bellows become unstable and result in buckling phenomena causing in-plane squirm or column squirm. This instability is detrimental, as it can severely reduce both the fatigue life and pressure capacity of the metal expansion joint resulting in failure of the pipeline system.
To address this, externally pressurized steel expansion joints are specifically designed. In this configuration, a precision machined, typically cylindrical outer sleeve or casing completely encases the stainless steel expansion bellows assembly. This outer casing forms a sealed chamber around this expansion bellows, allowing the working fluid to flow on the outside of the bellows. With this arrangement, the inner walls of the metal expansion bellows remain exposed only to atmospheric pressure while the internal fluid exerts a stabilizing external pressure on the stainless steel expansion bellows convolutions. As a result, the stainless steel bellows do not directly encounter internal expansive pressure but an external compressive pressure, thereby eliminating pressure instability as a design limitation and enabling the absorption of large axial expansions.
The construction of the externally pressurized metal expansion joint is such that one end of the expansion bellows is securely joint to the outer casing, while the opposite end is connected to an inner pipe engineered to slide axially within the outer casing. This sliding mechanism is the primary means by which the metal expansion joint accommodates the pipeline’s expansion and contraction. The outer casing serves a dual purpose: it provides the necessary external pressure for stability and also offers physical protection to the thin walled expansion bellows.
This outer casing of the steel expansion joint is essential not only for sustaining optimal performance but also for guaranteeing safety under high-pressure conditions, especially during failure scenarios. In the event of a failure, this design prevents the process fluid from escaping radially, thereby significantly reducing potential risks to personnel.
For all the externally pressurized expansion joint, Ocelflex integrates a drain port into the design to facilitate the removal of any condensate or sediment that may accumulate within the joint, a feature that is especially important in steam-based applications. Additionally, we offer to weld axial limit stops to further control movement by preventing excessive extension.
Ocelflex has manufactured and supplied several dual metal expansion joints in the externally pressurized pipe expansion joint design for applications that require larger axial movements.
External pressurization eliminates unstable pressure, a key design constraint, enabling longer length designs and greater axial movement without buckling.
This cover ensures ideal conditions for both external insulation and underground use, significantly reducing transport damage and providing a robust, leak resistant barrier against failures.
Eliminating the need for maintenance, lubrication, and repacking, this type of metal expansion joint is particularly advantageous in areas where access is restricted.
