Universal metal expansion joints are designed to accommodate multi-directional movement in piping systems. These joints consist of two metal expansion bellow elements positioned longitudinally and joined by a center spool piece through full-length welds. Unrestrained, this expansion joint configuration enables the joint to absorb all three movements – axial, lateral and angular displacement.
Each individual bellows contributes to the overall angular movement, resulting in a combined axial, lateral and angular deflection of the universal expansion joint. This design allows the metal compensator to compensate for complex movements that occur due to thermal expansion and contraction, making it an ideal solution for piping application which require different movements.
The universal metal expansion joints are unrestrained, hence require installation of additional guides and fix anchor points to withstand pressure thrust in the system. Due to its design restriction, we recommend universal metal expansion joints be installed in low pressure applications unless sufficient guides and anchor points are installed.
Universal metal expansion joints should not be confused with double metal expansion joints, in which the center pipe or spool piece is anchored to some rigid part of the installation pipeline system by means of an anchor base.
At Ocelflex, we manufacture restrained universal metal expansion joints ( or lateral metal expansion joints ) to manage significant lateral movements in piping systems. It is important to note that the lateral metal expansion joint design is not configured to compensate for axial or angular movements.
Ocelflex manufactures these stainless steel expansion joints with a single bellow design, for moderate lateral movement, or with two single metal expansion bellow design, welded together with a center spool piece, for larger lateral movements. The lateral steel expansion joint is restrained using specially designed threaded tie rods and lugs, fitted with nuts and washers, such that it can carry the pressure thrust of the pipeline system.
The length of the central spool piece plays a critical role in the performance of a pipe expansion joint, particularly in applications requiring large lateral movement. A longer spool piece enhances the ability of a metal expansion joint to absorb greater lateral deflection, making it essential for systems with significant directional changes. Designing a high-performance lateral expansion joint involves a careful balance of engineering precision and application knowledge.
As a leading manufacturer of pipe expansion joints, Ocelflex leverages its expertise to ensure each joint delivers optimal movement absorption, structural integrity, and long-term reliability in demanding environments.
Universal metal expansion joints provide multidirectional movement, making them an ideal solution for complex piping systems.
Universal metal expansion joint design represents a simple construction and capability for universal movement, which makes them particularly well-suited for integration into existing long piping networks.
Lateral metal expansion joints are engineered to accommodate substantial lateral movement in many planes, providing the flexibility required for piping systems that do not operate strictly within a single plane.
For smaller lateral deflection, single lateral steel expansion joint can be installed. However, lateral expansion joint designs can effectively absorb larger lateral shifts, by using longer spool pieces with multiple single lateral expansion joint.
